Description

Hello Mountaineers!

On behalf of HMC, we are stoked to invite you all to Welcome Weekend at Devil’s Lake from Friday, September 20nd - Sunday, September 22th! Want to join us for the camping portion of the trip? Stay tuned for more information and logistics.

The itinerary breakdown for the weekend is as follows:

Friday: We will be meeting at Memorial Union Circle at 3:00 PM - Please refer to and adhere to the packing list below to ensure that we have enough space for everyone and their belongings. Once the fleet vehicles are packed and loaded, we will head on over to Devil’s Lake State Park to set up camp, cook dinner, and enjoy some fun activities around the camp.

Saturday: Campers should expect to wake up at 8:00 AM, cook breakfast, pack up the cars with all necessary climbing gear, and head over to Misery Rock at 9:30 AM. All anchor setters expect to head out earlier. There, we will enjoy a full day of climbing followed by a big cookout at the end!

Sunday: This brings us to the final day - which is similarly structured to Saturday. Campers will wake up around 8:00 AM, make breakfast, and take down camp/pack up everything. Once that is all said and done, we can all enjoy a half day of climbing at the Railroad Tracks area before heading back to Madison around 5:00 PM.

By signing up for this event you are paying for:

  • Transportation via UW fleet to and from Devils Lake

  • Campsite for Friday and Saturday Night

  • Dinner for Friday and Saturday + Breakfast for Saturday and Sunday

Additional important things to note:

  • There are 20 spots for the camping portion of this trip. If you didn’t land a spot on the camping portion but wish to camp, add yourself to the waiting list!

  • There will be vegan and vegetarian options available for all meals – stay tuned for a dietary restrictions inquiry to be sent out closer to the trip.

What to bring:

  • As stated previously, space is very limited. Please try to pack light - only the necessaries!

  • You will be expected to bring personal climbing gear for yourself -  this includes shoes, chalk, harness, and helmet. If you don't have some of these, NO WORRIES! Please reach out to our wonderful Gear Managers (gearmanager@hoofermountaineering.org) and they will get you set up with all the items that you may need.

  • Furthermore, you will be expected to bring camping gear such as a tent, tarps, sleeping bags, etc. Once again, no worries if you don’t have any of this gear - all camping gear can be rented from the Outdoor UW Office.

  • Please bring a change of clothes or two for the different days - we don’t want any stinky campers :-)

  • Finally, bring anything you would typically need for an overnight stay - toothbrush, toothpaste, pillow, etc.

For those of you who didn't make it to the camping or can't go camping the whole weekend, there will be fleet vans leaving Madison on Saturday morning and returning Saturday night. Please check out the RecHub event titled “HMC Welcome Weekend - Day Trip Sign up” for that!

That’s it for now - there’s a lot of content to digest here, so please don't hesitate to reach out to mountaineering@hoofers.org if you have any additional questions!

Cheers,

Noah Winkel
