Description

This clinic provides an introduction and/or refresher to building top-rope anchors. Topics covered in this clinic include the use of natural and bolted rock protection, knots, hazard and risk mitigation with top-rope anchors, and a variety of rigging systems. Top-rope rating or equivalent knowledge is required. 

We will begin our clinic at the CCC parking lot at 8 am and finish around 3 pm. You can expect to be back in Madison between 4 and 5 pm

This event has a $5 reservation fee that will be refunded after attendance.

Items to bring:

  • At least 2L of water
  • Lunch and snacks
  • Sturdy closed-toed hiking shoes
  • Sun protection
  • Day pack (about 15-25L)
  • Helmet*
  • Harness*
  • Climbing shoes*
  • Belay device*

*can be rented in advance from HMC, email a gear manager (gearmanager@hoofermountaineering.org) to reserve

Optional items to bring (we don’t expect anyone to own these, but if you do, it can be useful to practice with your own gear) :

  • Personal tethering system (e.g. double-length sling, PAS, prussik, or assisted-breaking device like a Grigri)
  • Anchor gear (e.g. cord, slings, runners, webbing, lockers/non-lockers)

Transportation:

  • Option 1: Meet at the CCC parking lot at 8 AM (C76Q+8P Merrimac, Wisconsin).
  • Option 2: Meet at the Memorial Union Circle (circle between Memorial Union and Helen C. White hall) at 7 AM to carpool. Please let me know in advance if you need a ride since spots are limited!

Driving or Travel Details
For those who need a ride, meet at the Park St. circle at 7:00 am to depart. We will split gear and head up the CCC trail a little after 8:00 am. Depart by 4:00 pm to arrive back in Madison by 5:00pm. You are expected to chip in for gas.
