This clinic provides an introduction to building top-rope anchors. Topics covered in this clinic include the use of natural and bolted rock protection, knots, hazard and risk mitigation with top-rope anhors, and a variety of rigging systems. Top rope rating or equivalent knowledge is required.
We will begin our clinic at the south shore parking lot at 8 am and finish around 4 pm. You can expect to be back in Madison around 5:00 pm.
Items to bring:
- At least 2L of water
- Lunch and snacks
- Sturdy closed-toed hiking shoes
- Sun protection
- Helmet*
- Harness*
- Climbing shoes*
- Belay device*
- 35-50 liter Backpack
Optional items to bring (we don’t expect anyone to own these, but if you do, it can be useful to learn on your own gear) :
- Personal tethering system (e.g. sling, PAS, prussik, or auto-camming device like a Grigri)
- Anchor gear (e.g. cord, slings, runners, webbing, lockers/non-lockers)
Transportation:
- Personal vehicles - be prepared to chip in for gas!
- Meet at Memorial Union Circle (parking circle between Memorial Union and Helen C. White hall) at 7 AM to carpool, otherwise you can meet at the south shore parking lot at 8 am.

- Meet at the Park St. circle at 7:00 am to depart. We will split gear and head up a little after 8:00 am. Depart by 4:00 pm to arrive back in Madison by 5:00pm
