Description

Traditional (trad) climbing opens doors to the premier climbing destinations around the world. Whether it's test-piece leads at Devil's Lake, or big multi-pitch expeditions in Yosemite, this clinic will introduce you to the skills required to begin your trad climbing career. In thic clinic, students will practice placing their own gear while climbing under the supervision of instructors. Additional topics covered will include the risks associated with traditional lead climbing, gear extensions, and managing the sound trad-climber's head space. 

Prerequisites:

Anchors II rating, Sport climbing rating, or equivalent knowledge. Eager participants with a sport climbing rating and only Anchors I can reach out too (message timothy.t.yang@gmail.com). 

Items to bring:

  • 1-2L of water, lunch/snacks
  • Sturdy closed-toed hiking shoes
  • Layers for appropriate weather
  • Helmet
  • Harness
  • Climbing shoes
  • Belay device

Optional items to bring (we don’t expect anyone to own these, but if you do, it can be useful to learn on your own gear) :

  • Any personal gear is welcome: cams, nuts, draws, sling, etc. 
  • Rappel kit and anchor kit

Transportation:

  • We will carpool in personal vehicles for this event. You are also welcome to drive yourself.
  • Email timothy.t.yang@gmail.com to offer sets for carpooling, or to reserve a spot in a vehicle. Gas is reimbursed to volunteer drivers
  • Meet at Memorial Union Circle (parking circle between Memorial Union and Helen C. White hall) at 8 AM to carpool, otherwise you can meet at the CCC parking lot at 9 am. We will get back to Madison around 5 pm.
