Description

ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Interest Form - if you are interested in an ASA 101 Testout please sign up for this event and the instructor will contact you.

Event Description: Please sign-up if you are interested in testing out and receiving the American Sailing Association 101 Basic Keelboat certification. The instructor will contact you and review your skills and availability for the On-the Water Test-out program. You will then be directed to sign-up for a particular test-out and submit the fees.

Prerequisite: Hoofer Sailing Club Member, J 24 light rating or heavy keelboat crew rating.

The ASA 101 Test-out is an opportunity to demonstrate your sailing maneuvers in a sloop-rigged keelboat approximately 20-27 feet in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision .

Check this link to see the complete ASA Standards you are expected to know to test-out for this course.

The On-the water test-outs will be conducted from the J-24 fleet. Usually each test-out will consist of 2 to 4 students and last about 3 hours depending on the weather.

Cost: $170 students, $200 Faculty/Staff and Union Members.  Payment must be submitted prior to the on-the-water test-out.

This course includes the publications,  "Sailing Made Easy".  It will be available for pick-up after the on-the-water test-outs. The publication instructor reviews and written exam (100 question multiple choice) are TBD.  More information will be given during the on-the water test-out. The ASA logbook will be issued to you upon completion of the course.

When directed you will be able to register and pay the fees for the test-out at the Outdoor UW Office, or by phone by calling 608-262-1630.

Keep in mind, all the on-the-water test-outs are dependent on the weather. We can complete 3-4 students in about 3 hours if we have good steady wind; however, we may need to make arrangements for additional sessions if the wind calms or is from the south. Sail landings at the pier is especially a difficult maneuver to test with the south wind issues.
