Description

This is a placeholder for a Pictured Rocks Backpacking Key Swap trip, and it will be opened for participants at 8pm after the Outing meeting on 10/5. If you have any questions about the trip, I'll be at the meeting 10/5 and will be happy to answer any you may have. 

The cost for this trip is $82.60 which covers our 4 campsites, 4 meals x 12 people, and 2 UW Fleet minivans. Since this is a beginner trip, we want the financial barrier to entry to be minimal. If you would like a reduced cost for this trip, please apply here for a Hoofer Ambassadors grant. 3-4 participants will be selected and refunded part of the trip cost. Please ask me any questions on this at the Outing meeting on Tuesday, 10/5 or send me an email. 

There will be a pre-trip meeting the week of the 11th, and the specific day/time will be decided by availability of participants. If you miss the pre-trip meeting you will be removed from this trip without a refund. The next person on the waiting list will be given that spot.

A key swap trip means we'll have two groups going on the same trail but starting from different ends. On Saturday, the groups will meet for lunch and swap the fleet vehicle keys. We'll be hiking about 12 miles total along the absolutely gorgeous cliffs of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and checking out Big Star Cove, Mosquito Beach, and Chapel Beach as well as stopping for lunch / coffee in Munising. Expect chilly nights, beautiful stars, fall colors, and the crystal clear water of Lake Superior!

This trip is open to both new and experienced backpackers. We will have (in total) two group leaders, two leaders-in-training, and 8 participant spots. Ratings possible to achieve on this trip: BP2, BP2+ or BPL2. 

Itinerary

  • Friday, 10/22
    • Meet at Memorial Union parking circle 12pm CT
    • Leave 1pm CT
    • Arrive at campsites around 10pm CT
  • Saturday, 10/23
    • Group 1: Hike from Coves Campground to Mosquito River Campground (8.7 miles)
    • Group 2: Hike from Mosquito River Campground to Coves Campground (also 8.7 miles)
  • Sunday, 10/14
    • Leave from parking lots around 10:30am ET
    • Stop for coffee / lunch in Munising 
    • Arrive at Memorial Union parking circle around 5-6pm CT

    • Lunch: Bring one for the car or eat before 
    • Dinner: On the road - not covered by cost of trip
  • Saturday, 10/23
    • Breakfast: Pancake breakfast with scrambled eggs and coffee
    • Lunch: PBJs*, trail mix, and HyVee's best honeycrisp apples
    • Dinner: Vegetarian taco night
  • Sunday, 10/24
    • Breakfast: Oatmeal with berries and peanut butter*
    • Lunch: Bring one along or get food in Munising - not covered by cost of trip

Cancellation, Reschedule, and Refund Information
1. Due to the cold conditions expected, if there is rain forecasted for the weekend we will cancel the trip by the Outing meeting 10/19. 2. Full refunds will be given should we cancel the trip for any reason. 3. Participants that miss the pre-trip meeting will be removed from the trip without a refund. 4. Participants that drop out of the trip before the pre-trip meeting will be issued a full refund. 5. Participants that drop out of the trip between the pre-trip meeting and 10/15 will receive a partial refund until we can find someone to fill that spot. In that case, the new participant will pay $82.60 and the participant who dropped will be eligible for a refund for the other $41.30. 6. Participants that drop out of the trip between 10/15 and 10/22 will not receive a refund unless we can find someone to fill the spot.
