On Thursday afternoon I will lead a sea kayaking trip on a crossing from Memorial Union to Governor's Isle (the peninsula on the northern shore of Lake Mendota). This is a good introductory trip for learning about open-water crossings, which is necessary knowledge for those who would like to fully explore locations such as the Apostle Islands and Door County. In addition to simply enjoying the cooler, less-murky water farther from Mendota's shore, we will practice skills such as navigating with a deck compass, maintaining a heading, and proper procedures for paddling in areas with the potential for larger boat traffic (such as sailboats and motorboats).
I welcome any experienced sea kayakers who would like to co-lead to let me know.Route Plan: Please meet at the boathouse at Memorial Union by 1pm so that we can quickly get everyone the proper boat and gear. We will depart the Union by 1:30pm and head to the tip of Picnic Point. From the Point we will make the crossing to the tip of Governors Isle, where we will rest for a bit before crossing back to Memorial Union. Please be aware that this is a 6.3 mile expedition--for those new to sea kayaking, it may be a bit of an endurance paddle even though we will maintain a more relaxed pace. Because it is a crossing, once we reach the middle the of lake heading towards Governor's Isle everyone will need to be showing enough energy that they seem able to complete the rest of the paddle, or we will return to shore at that point. We will return to the Union and put away gear by 5pm.
Required Rating: Given the total distance and the potential for some small waves during the crossing even in green flag conditions, this trip requires at least an SK1 rating to participate.
Anticipated Weather Conditions: TBD; this trip is weather dependent, and I will reschedule it if conditions are too large for newer paddlers. The forecast is currently showing a chance of thunderstorms (in which case this will be rescheduled), but I will make the final call on the morning of the trip.
Personal Gear: sunglasses, sunscreen, water (1 liter or more), snack food, shoes you don't mind getting wet (no open-toe shoes), a hat, warm-when-wet clothing (no cotton), a change of clothes, a towel. I'd recommend a hat that keeps the sun off your neck if you have one.
Club Gear: kayak, paddle, PFD, wetsuit/drysuit, deck compasses, tow ropes (for group), pump (for group), first aid kit (for group)
