Event Information

Description

Want to kayak with Hoofers? Whether you're interested in whitewater or sea kayaking, the first step is to take the kayak lake lesson. This covers basic paddling and safety skills. We'll also cover boats and gear. The club has all you need, but there are rules on using it.

Meet outside of the Boathouse near the piers. You'll need to be dressed ready to get wet---swimsuit, maybe a synthetic shirt for sun protection (and a little warmth and comfort), and some kind of footwear (wet suit booties, aqua socks, water shoes, etc.----sports sandals generally DO NOT work well (like Tevas or Chacos)---sneakers can work, but they should be as low profile (thin soled) as possible). Going barefoot is not allowed.

If the air temperature is cool (70s - 60s °F), would recommend bringing along wool or synthetic layers to wear under a paddling jacket and wet suit.  The club has paddling jackets & a few wet suits available in the canoe/kayak equipment cage.

You also might bring some nose-plugs/clips as one thing we will cover is the wet exit---capsizing and getting yourself out of the boat safely. Also bring a dry change of clothes & towel (there are showers/changing rooms in the Boathouse bathrooms).

If you have prior experience kayaking you still must take the lake lesson---from there it is possible to fast-track you up the skill ratings. Talk to me or another leader about this. We welcome experienced paddlers into the club---just need to confirm skills.

Upon successful completion of this lesson you will receive the "kayak lake rating."

If you are interested in sea kayaking, the next step is to take a separate "SK-0 Lesson," which covers basics of sea kayaking equipment, skills, and rescues.

If you are interested in Whitewater kayaking, the next step is to attend an "Introduction to moving water" trip to earn an R1 paddling rating which make you eligible to go on a beginning whitewater kayaking trip.

FYI: swim test may be taken before kayak lake lesson.  Participants will be able to take a swim test after the lesson.
