Event Information

Description

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  You MUST reach out to the ASA Coordinator - JoAnn Long at josailing19@yahoo.com -- to schedule your test-out!  Test-out dates are determined by the students and instructor schedules, J-24 availability and the weather.  Usually when a student(s) signs up a number of dates and times are scheduled and the test-out is held when we have good sailing weather with appropriate wind for sail landings.  The written test is usually scheduled separately after the on-the-water test-out.

Prerequisite:  Hoofer Sailing Club member, J-24 light rating or heavy keelboat crew rating.

The ASA 101 Test-Out is an opportunity to demonstrate your sailing maneuvers in a sloop-rigged keelboat approximately 20-27 feet in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision.  Check this link (http://asa.com/asa_standards/standard_basic_keelboat_sailing.html) to see the complete ASA Standards you are expected to know to test-out in this course.

Students coming in from the heavy keelboat fleet can get checked off on the J-Fleet skills mastered through this test-out.  Be sure to inform your instructor beforehand.  A J-24 rating will not be given from this test-out; however, you may fulfill many of the requirements and be only a few classes away from a light rating.

This Class Includes:

The ASA Publication "Sailing Made Easy."  Please come to the Outdoor UW office to pick up your copy.  Students are expected to have read and studied this textbook prior to the class.  The written examination is based on this text.  The ASA Logbooks will be given to you by your instructor after you complete the written exam.

Cost:  $170 students, $200 Faculty/Staff and Union Members

Please register in-person at the Outdoor UW office -- Memorial Union waterfront.  you can register by phone by calling (608) 262-1630.
