Description

Prerequisites: Hoofer Sailing Club Ground School, Intro to Sailing, and Intro to Keelboats Class, or Badger Sloop Light Rating.
Suggested reading: "Sailing Made Easy," by the American Sailing Association, available in Boat House.

Salaam is the Club's most recent addition and was donated to Hoofers this Spring by a local UW Alum.  Salaam is an Ericson 26 and her name comes from the Arabic word meaning "Peace."  Salaam is used primarily in the Club's ASA Basic Keelboat Instruction Program and for "Intro to Keelboat" Classes.  She is part of the Club's Cruising Keelboat Fleet, (which also includes Spray and Knotty Rascal), and is appointed with many creature comfort features traditionally found on cruising sail boats.

Lessons on Salaam will focus on various sailing and cruising skills such as boat handling, sail trim, operating under engine power, boat systems (diesel, electrical and water), anatomy of a sailboat and her rigging, basic knots, Aids to Navigation, Rules of the Road, pier and mooring pin landings under both sail and motor, anchoring techniques, tying at the pier, proper use of spring lines, use of winches, and general seamanship.  Lessons will be taught on Salaam with an emphasis on STEWARDSHIP and proper care and maintenance of a well equipped cruising keelboat.  (You will be taught how, and expected to leave the boat IN BETTER SHAPE THAN YOU FOUND IT, after each lesson).

The lesson will meet by the Memorial Union Boathouse. Lessons proceed in all weather except thunderstorms. Please dress appropriately for the conditions of the day.

Please feel free to list the top 2 or 3 items from your Ratings Check List that you would like to work on in this lesson in the Additional Information section below.  We will do our best to include your requests in our lesson plans for the evening to help you progress toward your eventual rating on this boat.  Welcome Aboard!
