Local Lake Cleanup: Yahara River

Join us for the first Take a Stake in Our Waters dive series to help keep our lakes and waterways clean. During this event, you'll be on a mission: to find junk and get it off the bottom of our lakes. You never know whether you'll find a rare artifact or anchor!

The Tenney Lock will be closed for divers to clean the bottom of the Yahara River between Lakes Mendota and Monona. Normally, there's way too much boat traffic to even think about diving it. That means lots of "treasure" waiting to be discovered.

Even though the river is almost a mile long, you'll have little trouble traversing it since there's a fair amount of current and you can just drift along. There will be a van on the other side of the isthmus to get divers back to the starting point.

Even if you're not up for diving, we are looking for volunteers to paddle along in canoes and help bring garbage out.

Costs for this event: Renting gear or air tanks will only be $10. (This is half the normal rental cost for gear and air. It's our way of saying  Thank You for helping to keep the lakes clean.)

To pay for gear, sign up for this event. It will let you pay with credit card ahead of time.

Gear checkout will be Thursday, April 26 from 6-7pm in the dive locker at the Memorial Union. We'll meet Saturday morning at the Memorial Union and drive the short distance to the dive site.

What: Hoofer SCUBA Local Lake Cleanup Dive - Yahara River
Where: Tenney Park, Madison. Meet at the Memorial Union or at the dive site meeting point
When: Saturday, April 28 from 8am to Noonish. (Gear check-out Thursday, April 26 from 6-7PM.) If you meet us at the dive site, the dive will begin at 9am.
Who: Current Hoofer SCUBA members. Minimum open water certification is required to dive. We're also looking for non-divers to be shore or canoe support.
