Description

New and Beginner Climbers, Sign up for Hoofer Mountaineering Heelers!

Summary

Heelers is a sequence of 3 sessions which teach you how to belay, tie in, manage the rope, and introduce you to outdoor climbing and beginnings of trad gear placements. This is great if you have limited climbing experience (especially if you have only ever climbed indoors) because it aims at providing skills necessary to be competent and independent enough in your climbing to be able to climb outside of a highly organized/facilitated club trip.

Meet and Greet at The Sett: 9/24/17 6:30pm-8:30pm

Meet other new and beginner climbers and get climbing!  Arrive at 6:30pm to sign up for a daily or longer membership and get an orientation to the space.  At 7pm, we will get together to introduce ourselves and formally meet you.  From there, we will discuss the program and have fun climbing.

You must purchase a daily or membership to the Sett and have an orientation. Hoofer prices are one price point lower than published (i.e.: academic year membership to the Sett is $33.30). We will provide FREE Shoes!  https://union.wisc.edu/events-and-activities/climbing-and-bowling/sett-recreation-pricing-and-details/

Welcome Weekend: 9/29-9/30

Head out to Devil's Lake to enjoy some outside climbing with the rest of the club.  Learn to move on the outdoor walls, enjoy some time getting to know others, and get climbing!  Details can be found on the Welcome Weekend event page. Cost is included in the Heeler program (woohoo, you save $10!) Transportation will also be provided as part of the Heeler program if you need it. Camping isn't mandatory.

Intro to Gear Placement: 10/14 8am-7pm

We'll return to Devil's Lake to learn about gear placements. This is the first step to learning to set TR trad anchors at Devil's Lake and trad leading. Learn about different kinds of gear and when to use them and practice placing different gear. A large portion of the day will also be spent climbing! Transportation will be available (covered in the cost of Heelers).

You'll need your gear, water, lunch, and money for dinner if you'd like (we will probably stop at a restaraunt on the way back).

Please let your leaders know well in advance if you're going to need to borrow gear from the gear locker--it's free!
