Description

Anyone want to get some experience with bike touring? I know I do.

Bike touring involves loading up a bike with camping gear (using racks and panniers), riding somewhere, camping overnight, and repeating until your bike breaks or you run out of food/money. It’s similar to backpacking in the idea of self-sufficiency, but on a bike you can cover much more ground.

Blue Mound State Park is about 30 miles west of Madison – the perfect distance for a nice bike ride. The park has trails for hiking, two observatory towers, and campsites designated for bikers.

Friday 10/20:

  • Leave Hoofer boathouse around 12:00pm
  • Arrive at Blue Mound campsite by 5:00pm
  • Explore park

Saturday 10/21:

  • Explore park
  • Leave around 1:00pm
  • Eat lunch at Grumpy Troll in Mount Horeb
  • Return to Madison by 7:00pm

Cost of the trip: $10 for Wisconsin State Trails pass ($5 for each day. Or you could get an annual pass for $25). Blue Mound campsites cost $18 a night, and the limit is 6 people per site, so that breaks down to $3 each. We will split the cost of food once we know how much it will be. Probably won’t be more than $15.

You don’t need to own any special biking gear. Hoofers has plenty for you to use. You should be in good biking shape (i.e. comfortable with biking 30 miles over relatively flat terrain while carrying camping gear).
