This Lesson is for Individuals intending to use the High Performance Motorboat at Hoofers
Prerequisite: Motorboat Rating
Note: Any individual born after 1988 is required to carry their boater safety certificate with them anytime they are operating a motorized vehicle.
1) Skills needed to demonstrate for rating (Having a rating does not give one rights to assign rating)
a. Prestart Check
i. Gas, gas line, kill chord, battery, plug, neutral throttle and gear check, location of choke.
ii. Proper USCG requirements: 1 Type IV, paddle, lights (sunset to sunrise), 1 lifejacket per person on board.
b. Start Check
i. Is there coolant flow, does it sound right (let it warm up)
c. Low speed maneuvering skills
i. Coming to and from a dock/stationary object (bow in and parallel docking)
ii. Low speed maneuvering in a straight line
1. Can they keep the boat on course
iii. Zero radius turn
1. Must be able to maneuver boat one full turn without moving a boatlength from beginning of the maneuver.
iv. Backing down
1. Must be able to back in a straight line for 50yds
v. Anchoring
1. Must be able to come to and from anchorage
a. 3:1 or 7:1 scope: depth ratio
d. High speed Maneuvering (must be clipped into safety chord)
i. Must be able to get the boat up on plane in a smooth, non-aggressive fashion.
ii. Must be able to execute a high speed S-turn (for current water conditions) around a stationary object
iii. Must be able to execute a high speed J-stop
iv. Must be able to adequately and quickly reach and recover a MOB
1. Motor must be turned off at MOB
